Plug it in and hear it growl, not buzz or grind, with none of that high-pitched clatter that tells you rapidly moving parts don't fit as tightly as they ought to. It's scary to use it for real for the first couple of times, but that's because you're making difficult-to-fix experiments on your appearance. After you realize nobody's laughing at your haircut, it's easier to do it the next time. Best of all, better even than saving the cash, you're freed from monthly sessions trapped in a chair listening to some cosmetologist blather about her cats or her girlfriends.
One thing: I wish the basic kit included some attachments for longer hair, but I suppose they have to make a buck selling the optional extras.
(PS. I use this only for medium-short men's haircuts. No opinion about hairstyling for women, kids, or those overconscious of the latest fashions.)
